No Charges in Christchurch Toddler's Dog Attack Death
Police have announced that no charges will be laid in connection with the death of one-year-old Sonny-Charles Watson, who died after being bitten by a dog at a home in Basingstoke St, Aranui on August 14. The case will be referred to the Coroner, according to police.
Detective Senior Sergeant Dan Overend said previously that the young child was found in a critical condition at the scene. "Despite the immediate efforts of first responders and a member of the household, the child sadly died at the scene," Overend said.
The dog involved was known to the occupants and lived at the address. Christchurch City Council confirmed the dog remained at its animal shelter and was scheduled to be euthanised this week. The council previously said the crossbreed was registered and had not previously come to its attention.
Overend also confirmed the dog had been removed from the Basingstoke St property and said police were in close contact with Christchurch City Council animal control as they continued their inquiries. "This includes speaking with those who live at the home, as well as providing them with support," he said.
Sonny's parents, Greg Watson and Jordan Doherty, have paid tribute to their son. In a statement released through police, they described him as "the light of everyone's life" and "the most beautiful little boy, full of love and laughter for everyone." In an earlier social media tribute, they wrote: "It is with great sadness that we have lost our wee sunshine," and asked for time to grieve. They also wrote: "Fly high sunshine, love you forever."
A Givealittle page was set up to support the couple, and more than $55,000 has been donated so far. The person who set up the page said, "Our dear friends Greg and Jordan are facing the unimaginable following the sudden and heartbreaking loss of their 1-year-old son. His beautiful presence touched many lives, and he will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him."
