Anthropic Introduces Model Hardware Standard
Anthropic has announced a new software standard designed to let AI assistants such as Claude work more effectively with robots and science and manufacturing equipment. The Model Hardware Standard (MHS), released under a research preview, allows developers in scientific, robotics, and manufacturing fields to test how AI interacts with physical devices and to implement necessary safety safeguards before broader deployment.
The standard stores information that AI assistants can use to understand how hardware operates, reducing the need for paper manuals or knowledge confined to a few experts. For example, a factory robot arm vendor could use MHS to specify safe operational limits, such as restricted speed or movement angles, according to The Japan Times.
Capabilities and Partner Program
MHS enables AI agents to operate instruments including microscopes, liquid handlers, and robotic arms, and to handle tasks from routine drug discovery to calibrating lasers on a quantum computer, according to pymnts.com. The standard also supports round-the-clock operation and, in some cases, allows agents to recover from hardware errors without human intervention.
Anthropic is making MHS available to an initial group of partners across science, robotics, electronics, and manufacturing. After working with these partners to build safety evaluations and establish best practices for AI systems controlling physical equipment, Anthropic plans to release the standard as open source, pymnts.com reported.
"As we developed MHS, we shared it with a handful of labs and hardware manufacturers in biotech, robotics, quantum computing and other fields," Anthropic said. "Across these early projects, we saw MHS reduce the time it took to integrate devices, make it possible to iterate faster in a variety of experimental settings, and assist with the live operation of machines and real-time fault detection."
Broader Support for Scientists
In a separate announcement, Anthropic said it is expanding support for scientists by opening 10,000 seats for scientists around the world to access Claude subscriptions for free and at discounted rates, and by expanding its AI for Science program beyond biological disciplines. "By helping scientists access and increase their usage of Claude through subscriptions, credits and products like Claude Science, we aim to radically accelerate scientific discovery," the company stated.
