Andrew Garfield, the 43-year-old actor known for his roles in 'The Amazing Spider-Man' and 'Tick, Tick... Boom!', has opened up about his evolving perspective on his career and life. In a recent interview with Variety, Garfield admitted that leaving Hollywood has crossed his mind frequently, reflecting a significant shift in his priorities.

When asked if he ever thinks about stepping away from his career in the public eye, Garfield responded, "All the time." He elaborated on his demanding schedule, saying, "I've worked a lot this year. I've done like 11 months, 12 months, straight back-to-back projects." He expressed a desire for a simpler life, adding, "If I had my druthers, people would just see them, and I could go whittle wood in the Somerset countryside and think about what the birds might be doing."

Garfield's comments come as he has been contemplating a departure from Hollywood for the past couple of years, a sentiment he shared with Variety, as reported by multiple outlets.

From Childhood Dreams to Earthbound Aspirations

Garfield's reflections are rooted in his journey from achieving childhood dreams to seeking a more grounded existence. He recalled his early career success, which included starring in 'The Social Network' and the Spider-Man franchise. "I was doing Spider-Man. That was a dream from 40 years ago, so I was checking off one of my big dreams. I was also checking off just being an actor," he told Variety.

However, his aspirations have evolved. "I still have dreams, but they're slightly more earthbound than my previous ones," Garfield said. "They're maybe a bit more philosophical and existential than achievement-based." He emphasized a desire for a certain quality of life and relationships, stating, "I want a certain quality of relationships with my family and friends. I want a certain quality of relationship with myself."

A History of Breaks and Returns

Garfield's contemplation of leaving is not new. In 2022, he announced he was taking a break from acting following his roles in 'The Eyes of Tammy Faye', 'tick, tick... BOOM!', and 'Spider-Man: No Way Home'. According to one report, this break lasted roughly two years before he returned with 'We Live in Time', which premiered in late 2024.

Looking ahead, Garfield's latest film, 'The Magic Faraway Tree', was released on August 21, 2026. He is also slated to take the lead role in the upcoming film 'The Uprising', set for release on September 11, 2026.

The Toll of Fame and Social Media

Garfield also spoke about the pressures of fame and social media, admitting he has desired to escape them. "I think we've all had the impulse to smash our phones or throw it into the forest or throw it into the sea because we know it's taking our lives from us in some way," he said, adding, "I'm not better than anybody else."

He shared practical advice on managing phone usage: "I've been told, and I find it to be true, that if you leave your phone in another room, that does a lot of the heavy lifting. As soon as it's in the room, you're kind of f*."

Garfield's comments reflect a broader contemplation of life's brevity. He told Variety, "I've been initiated recently into a new visceral understanding of how f short this visit is on this planet, in this body. And I feel this crazy new urgency." He added that he only wants to do things that "speak to [his] soul," noting that culturally, "there's so much numbness."
