Alpine lock in Colapinto and Gasly for 2027
Alpine have confirmed that Franco Colapinto will continue to race alongside Pierre Gasly in an unchanged driver line-up for the 2027 Formula 1 season. The team announced the decision on Thursday, ending speculation about its future pairings as it looks to build on recent progress.
Colapinto, a 23-year-old Argentine, joined Alpine as a reserve driver for 2025 before stepping into the race seat from the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, replacing Jack Doohan. He stayed with the team for this season and has since been a consistent points scorer, helping Alpine to sixth in the Teams' Championship.
Gasly, who signed a contract to stay with Alpine until at least the end of 2028 around this time last year, remains Colapinto's teammate. Alpine described the pairing as providing "the perfect match-up to drive the team forwards into the future."
Performance and team backing
Colapinto has scored 19 world championship points so far this year, finishing in the points in six of the 12 Grands Prix. His best results include seventh in Miami and sixth in Canada.
Executive Advisor Flavio Briatore praised the driver's development, saying: "We have seen Franco truly grow and mature into a great driver this year. His results in Miami and Montreal especially confirmed what I already knew: Franco belongs in Formula 1 and he belongs at this team."
Briatore also stressed the importance of stability in the driver line-up, while making clear that the team's main focus remains improving the car. "For me, having consistency is very important," he said. "We are now settled from a driver point of view and I have said many times that, while this is an important piece of the puzzle, the most significant we have to get right is designing and building a fast race car, which absolutely remains our number one priority."
Colapinto's journey
Colapinto made his Grand Prix debut in 2024 with Williams before moving to Alpine as a reserve driver. He was promoted to a race seat after six rounds of the 2025 season, replacing Jack Doohan, and produced a best result of 11th at the Dutch Grand Prix in that campaign.
He is the first Formula 1 driver from Argentina since Gaston Mazzacane at the 2001 San Marino Grand Prix.
Colapinto said he was pleased to remain with the team: "I am very pleased to remain with this team in 2027. I feel very happy and very settled here and it's been even better that we have made significant progress this year compared to last."
"We have a lot more milestones to reach and I know the team is working so hard in finding performance and making the car better and better," he added. "Our long-term goals are obvious – to compete and win."
What's next
The confirmation comes ahead of the Italian Grand Prix, where Colapinto is set to receive the upgraded package that the team debuted with Gasly at the previous round in Zandvoort.
