Decision Looming for India's Chief Selector

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to decide on the future of Ajit Agarkar as the chairman of the senior men's selection committee, with his tenure ending this month. Reports indicate that the matter could be discussed at the BCCI's Annual General Meeting on September 18, as reported by Cricket Addictor.

According to a top source who spoke to Sports Tak, senior BCCI officials are likely to meet Agarkar to discuss whether he will continue in the role. The source said that the board is open to offering Agarkar an extension, but no final decision has been made yet.

Continuity Faction Gains Traction

A section within the BCCI is reportedly satisfied with the coordination between Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir, viewing it as a positive factor. As reported by Cricket Addictor, some board officials believe there is no need to disturb the setup before the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup, which could secure Agarkar's position for now.

This view is echoed by Outlook India, which reports that a faction within the board favours continuity for the Gambhir-Agarkar combination, believing the pair have developed a good working relationship and should see through the current World Cup cycle.

India Today also notes that there is support within the BCCI and the Indian team for Agarkar to remain, but the final decision depends on the upcoming meeting.

Agarkar's Track Record

Agarkar took charge as chairman of the senior selection committee in July 2023, replacing Chetan Sharma. Under his oversight, India reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, losing to Australia, and then won the 2024 T20 World Cup against South Africa. The success continued with the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, where India defeated New Zealand unbeaten. Cricket Addictor also credits the team with winning the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Outlook India summarises this as a record of reaching four ICC finals and winning three. However, India Today points out that the period has also included difficult results during a transition, including a historic home Test series defeat to New Zealand and a disappointing Border-Gavaskar Trophy campaign in Australia, as reported by Outlook India.
