The Productivity Paradox
At a recent conference, an attendee asked how many participants used AI at work and felt more productive because of it. Almost every hand went up. But when asked how many felt less busy or more connected to their colleagues, those hands came down.
This reveals a paradox, as noted in a report: AI clearly helps us work faster, but productivity gains do not automatically become free time. Whether time saved through AI translates into deeper learning, better well-being, or simply more work depends on the choices made by both employees and organizations.
The Missing Element in AI Strategies
Organizations are investing billions in artificial intelligence, upgrading technology platforms, redesigning workflows, and training employees to work alongside increasingly capable AI tools. Yet one critical variable is often missing from AI adoption strategies: the physical workplace.
That oversight is understandable. AI is typically viewed as a technology transformation. Most discussions focus on data, governance, automation, and productivity gains. But AI's long-term impact extends beyond technology. It changes the nature of teamwork itself, and with that, it changes what organizations need from their people and the places where work happens.
As AI takes on more routine and information-intensive tasks, human contributions become even more valuable. Judgment, creativity, coaching, relationship-building, and innovation move to the forefront. Those capabilities do not develop in isolation. They are influenced by the environments where people interact, learn, and solve problems together.
The organizations that generate the greatest return from AI may not simply be those that deploy the best technology. They may be the ones that intentionally align technology, talent, and workplace strategies to support new ways of working - and evidence of this can be seen among leading technology organizations who are already adapting their places of work accordingly.
How AI Is Reshaping Work
Generative AI can analyze large volumes of information, create first drafts, summarize meetings, and answer questions in seconds. As these capabilities become embedded throughout the enterprise, employees will spend less time gathering information and more time applying it.
This shift is significant. For decades, much of office work revolved around accessing information, processing it, and translating it into action. Today, AI is increasingly capable of handling portions of that process.
Why the Office Still Matters
AI doesn't need an office, but the humans using it do. Dr. Alisa Yu, Senior Research Manager at Atlassian's Team Lab, said: "AI doesn't need an office, but the humans using it do — for the energy, creativity, and momentum that can only come from being face-to-face."
Similarly, Izabella Lorenz, Global Workplace Experience and Real Estate Strategy leader at Zoom, said on the About Place podcast: "We still believe in the value of the physical office and physical space, but the role has changed. It's no longer [just] the place where people come to work. It's that connection. It's the mentoring of others. It's that social interaction..."
Cisco has found that AI adoption requires a greater focus on supporting healthy, trust-based team relationships. LinkedIn renamed its workplace strategy "The Relationship Workplace." Atlassian conducted internal research indicating physical spaces remain essential to meeting interpersonal needs, despite not requiring office attendance.
A New Role for the Office
AI adoption plans should include the physical workplace, according to experts. The office is no longer just a place to work; it's a hub for connection, mentorship, and culture. Workplace priorities now include learning and mentorship, cross-functional interaction, team co-creation and alignment, culture and belonging, and balance with individual focus.
The key takeaway: AI is making us more productive, but it's not making us less busy or more connected. To achieve those outcomes, organizations must intentionally design their physical workplaces to complement AI's capabilities and support human collaboration.
