China Postpones Chang'e-7 Lunar Mission

China has postponed its planned Chang'e-7 lunar mission, which was set to carry out explorations including searching for water ice on the moon. The China Manned Space Agency said in a brief statement that the mission does not meet the launch conditions and "cannot take place during the planned window this year." The decision was made following a "comprehensive assessment," the agency added, and was based on the principles of "prudence, reliability and absolute mission success." It did not further elaborate on the reasons behind the decision.

The Chang'e-7 spacecraft was originally set to lift off in the coming days from the Wenchang Space Launch Site on China's southern Hainan island. Preparations for the mission, the seventh in the Chang'e moon exploration program, had been carried out at the Wenchang launch site over the past weeks. According to Xinhua, the official state news agency, the mission aimed at making breakthroughs in key technologies and was set to explore permanently shadowed craters on the moon and conduct environmental and resource surveys of the lunar south pole.

Chang'e refers to a Chinese moon goddess. The Chang'e-6 probe returned to Earth in 2024 with rock and soil samples from the far side of the moon in a world first.

Possible Causes: Weather and Launch Windows

While the space agency did not specify why the launch was called off, several outlets have pointed to weather as a likely factor. The growth of Tropical Depression Narra in the Gulf of Tonkin has been cited by reports from Space and India Today as the cause of the delay. The storm has made launch operations from Wenchang increasingly difficult, with no launches expected from the site before the current lunar launch window closes.

The National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (Narit), which developed a scientific instrument on board the spacecraft, announced that the mission would be postponed due to the development of Tropical Storm Narra. "Due to the target landing site on the lunar south pole, this makes for a very particular launch window in which the sun lined up just right for the lunar crater," Narit said, adding that "a delay by a few days would mean postponing to the next launch window in a month at the earliest."

According to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, the storm is expected to continue tracking near Hainan for the next two or three days. Ars Technica noted that the Long March 5 rocket shares an engine with the Long March 7A vehicle that was lost during ascent two weeks ago, though the outlet described that as an unlikely cause of the delay.

Officials initially pushed the launch back a day, to Monday, before concluding that the new target was unattainable as well, according to reports. Some online reports suggest that Chang'e-7 could lift off as soon as September, while others — including Xinhua's report — have it launching sometime in 2027.

Mission Overview: Seeking Water Ice at the Lunar South Pole

Chang'e-7, described as China's most technologically complex lunar mission to date, is designed to search for water ice in permanently shadowed craters near the moon's south pole. The uncrewed mission will feature a lander, a rover, and a "hopping" probe — a small robotic craft powered by solar energy designed to jump into and out of deep craters.

The lander is expected to touch down near the edge of the Shackleton Crater, a 21-kilometer-wide (13-mile-wide) pit close to the south pole. Craters there have not seen sunlight in billions of years, and temperatures can drop as low as minus 203 degrees Celsius (minus 334 degrees Fahrenheit), according to NASA. Scientists believe these conditions could preserve ancient water and other volatile compounds.

A candidate landing site near the rim of Shackleton Crater has been mentioned, and China has not publicly disclosed a specific timeline, though space watchers estimate a landing attempt around November.

China aims to build a permanent human presence on the moon, with plans for a crewed landing before 2030 and a joint research station with Russia by 2035. The mission comes as other nations also set their sights on the lunar south pole: the United States, India, and Russia have all targeted the region, with India's Chandrayaan-3 the only successful landing nearby in 2023. NASA's VIPER rover, the European Space Agency's PROSPECT drilling package, and the Japan-India LUPEX rover are also expected at the south pole in the coming years.

The Chang'e-7 delay also comes less than two weeks after a rare launch failure from the same Wenchang site, involving a Long March 7A rocket carrying the Zhongxing-4B communications satellite. Xinhua reported that an "anomaly" occurred during the rocket's flight, with the cause still under investigation.

Space Race Context

China's mission was planned as the country vies with the United States to land astronauts on the moon and secure a near-permanent presence on its surface. In June, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said the U.S. was "very much in a space race" against China, with both nations aiming with astronauts to the moon in the next few years. The U.S. is competing in this race through its Artemis program.

The International Lunar Research Station, a joint project of China and Russia, represents another pillar of China's long-term lunar ambitions. China has also invested billions into its space program, and President Xi Jinping has described the country's ambitions as its "space dream."
