Fan acclaim for Welsh crime thriller
Fans of chilling detective dramas are being urged to watch Wolf, a Welsh crime thriller full of unexpected twists that has been hailed as "superb TV" and "an absolute gem". The BBC series, which originally aired in 2023, has drawn particular praise for its blend of drama, horror, and dark comedy.
One fan, writing on IMDb, called the show "compulsive viewing", describing it as "an unusual mix of drama and horror, it's a real mind bender". They added: "Mind-blowing, outrageous, gruesome and fun, bravo." Another reviewer labelled it "absolutely seamless", praising the "dark comedy at its best" and "top-grade quality" acting, while a third compared the series to hit shows like Luther, describing it as "Luther meets Funny Games".
Plot and cast
Wolf is based on the novels by Mo Hayder and follows DI Jack Caffrey, played by Ukweli Roach, a detective who believes his neighbour murdered his 10-year-old brother in the 1990s. The BBC's own description teases: "Life is full of surprises. A gruesome shock for a wealthy family, and a young detective with horrors of his own. It's a deliciously bloody, twisting race against time."
The series tells two interwoven stories: Caffrey's dark personal quest and the ordeal of the Anchor-Ferrers family, a wealthy and isolated family in Monmouthshire who find themselves victimised, trapped, and terrorised by someone's cruel games. Iwan Rheon stars as Molina and Sacha Dhawan as Honey.
Filming in Wales
The series was filmed in Monmouthshire and Cardiff, with eagle-eyed fans spotting familiar locations including Neath Abbey, Penarth, Pontyclun, and Ewenny Priory in Bridgend. The Welsh setting was a point of pride for Rheon, who said it was lovely to be back working in Wales. As reported by goodto.com in August 2023, Rheon said: "Obviously, I'm Welsh and grew up in Wales, so it has a very dear place in my heart."
He also praised the country's filming credentials, saying: "It's been really great to get to use the landscapes here; Wales has quite a wide variety of landscapes, so you can really make it look like anything. It's a really beautiful place to film. I think more and more things are being made here, so the crews are fantastic - great professionals in every department, which is amazing. Wales is just as good as anywhere to film."

Wolf, a six-part miniseries, is available to watch on Apple TV.
