Molly McNearney, Jimmy Kimmel's wife and longtime collaborator, got candid about the start of their romance on a recent episode of Dax Shepard's Armchair Expert podcast. McNearney, who is also an executive producer on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, admitted she initially thought getting involved with her boss was a "terrible idea."
A Slow-Burning Connection
McNearney met Kimmel weeks after landing her job on his talk show, but their relationship didn't turn romantic until about eight years later. She recalled their early encounter, when Kimmel's reaction to learning she did triathlons was a blunt "How stupid." At that point, there was no hint of mutual interest.
The turning point came during a writers' meeting when staff members were asked to name their five favorite foods. McNearney listed "pizza and gnocchi, crab claws, BLT and chocolate chip cookies." Six months later, Kimmel invited her to his house after work and had prepared every single dish.
"Talk about a long play," McNearney said on the podcast. "I go to Jimmy's house, he asks me to come over after work… and he opens up the door and it smells delicious and he's like, 'I made some things,' and it was pizza and gnocchi, crab claws, chocolate chop cookies and BLT."
When Shepard asked if she immediately understood the gesture as romantic interest, she replied: "Yes! It made me very excited and very nervous. I remember thinking, 'Oh, no. This is a bad idea'. He was my boss."
A Secret Beginning
McNearney said her hesitation stemmed from the power imbalance and fears about her career. "I just kept thinking statistically this is not going to work out and your life isn't going to change but mine does," she explained. "And that's what freaked me out."
Kimmel, however, said he "didn't have that thought at the time," to which McNearney responded: "The person in power usually doesn't, but I was very nervous about it. I thought it was a terrible idea. I was very skittish."
The couple kept their relationship secret from colleagues initially, but they eventually married in July 2013. They now have two children, Jane, 12, and Billy, 9.
Life in the Spotlight
The couple has faced personal challenges, including their son Billy's early medical emergency and the temporary suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live! in September 2025. The show was pulled by ABC after comments Kimmel made following the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Kimmel said on his comeback broadcast that he never intended to blame any particular group.
McNearney revealed on the podcast that the suspension affected their children, recalling how Jane reacted to the prospect of the show disappearing. She also addressed the possibility of retirement, saying it "definitely appeals to me for the nervous system of the household."
Despite the ups and downs, Jimmy Kimmel Live! remains on ABC with McNearney as one of its executive producers. The show has featured guest hosts including Rosie O'Donnell, Anthony Anderson, Ike Barinholtz, Colman Domingo, and Tiffany Haddish during Kimmel's absence.
