Road Collapse at IFFCO Chowk
A section of road caved in at IFFCO Chowk, one of Gurugram's busiest intersections, on the stretch connecting MG Road towards Gurugram, creating a roughly 25-foot-wide pit. The incident occurred during a busy period, triggering panic among commuters and raising fears of a major accident. However, no vehicle was reported to have fallen into the collapsed section, and no injuries were reported.
Gurugram Traffic Police personnel and officers rushed to the spot after receiving information about the road collapse. The affected portion was immediately cordoned off with barricades to keep vehicles and pedestrians away from the damaged stretch. Traffic officials also regulated the movement of vehicles and diverted traffic where necessary to prevent any untoward incident.
Police said the situation was brought under control promptly and commuters were kept at a safe distance from the damaged section. The exact cause of the collapse is yet to be established, but a damaged or leaking underground pipeline is suspected to have weakened the road, officials said.
Response and Repair Efforts
The traffic police alerted senior officials of the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) and the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) following the incident. Teams from the concerned departments reached the site to assess the damage and begin repair work. Authorities have started measures to fill the pit and restore the damaged road.
Traffic police officials remain at the site to manage vehicular movement and ensure the safety of commuters until the road is repaired.
Rain Disruption in Gurugram
Meanwhile, heavy rain lashed Gurugram on Monday, August 24, resulting in widespread waterlogging, severe traffic congestion, and prolonged disruption for commuters. Several school buses and ambulances were reportedly stuck on flooded roads for hours, prompting the Gurugram administration to recommend work-from-home for employees of corporate and private offices on Tuesday, August 25.
Government and private schools, along with other educational institutions, were also asked to conduct classes online on Tuesday as authorities remained cautious about the weather conditions and the possibility of further waterlogging. The downpour left several major roads and important stretches submerged after nearly an hour of intense rainfall.
School buses were reportedly stranded for hours in areas including Rail Vihar in Sector 47 and near Subash Chowk. The situation sparked concern among parents, with several residents turning to social media to share updates about children being stuck in school buses. One resident claimed that their child had been stranded inside a school bus for more than four hours. Sohna Road was also badly affected, with both school buses and ambulances reportedly caught in the waterlogged stretches.
