Shooting in Canoga Park Leaves Two Women Wounded

A shooting in Canoga Park early Sunday morning left two women wounded, one of them pregnant and in critical condition, according to police reports.

The incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. at an apartment unit in the 21900 block of Roscoe Boulevard, as reported by CBS News, citing the Los Angeles Police Department. However, the New York Post, citing police, placed the shooting at approximately 7 a.m. in an alley near an apartment complex on the 8300 block of Northgate Avenue.

Officers responding to the scene found two women suffering from gunshot wounds, according to CBS News. They were transported to a nearby hospital in grave condition, the outlet reported. The New York Post specified that one of the victims, a 22-year-old who is pregnant, was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, while the second woman, also 22, was hospitalized and is expected to survive.

Investigation Underway; Possible Suspect Detained

The LAPD has not yet announced any arrests, though CBS News reported that one person of interest was detained in connection with the shooting. The New York Post added that police initially detained a possible suspect but released the individual after determining they were not involved.

Detectives are investigating the circumstances leading up to the attack, including whether the victims were targeted or in the wrong place at the wrong time, the New York Post reported. LAPD Detective Rachel Evans told the outlet, "It's too early to say, but we have some good leads and we're working on that."

The New York Post did not mention a domestic violence angle and instead focused on the possibility of gang activity, though authorities have not confirmed that the shooting was gang-related.

The gunman was described by police as a 26-year-old Hispanic man, according to the New York Post. The outlet also reported that five people were inside the parked vehicle when a man approached and allegedly fired a handgun before fleeing. The vehicle then rolled down the alley and slammed into a refrigerator.

Community Rattled by Recent Violence

Residents in the area have been left rattled by the violence. Olga Valdez, who lives nearby, told NBC that the gunshots jolted her awake Sunday morning, and she initially thought she was hearing fireworks. She estimated hearing roughly five shots.

Valdez also mentioned that the neighborhood had seen another deadly shooting just days earlier, fueling concerns about safety. She expressed a desire for increased police patrols to reassure residents.

Police have not released the victims' identities or stated whether they knew the attacker, the New York Post reported.
