The guide, written in plain language, covers required documents, payment steps, and key deadlines, aiming to make the process more accessible for applicants both inside and outside the UK.
Key Steps and Deadlines
According to the guide, prospective students should begin by confirming that they need a Student visa, using the visa-checking tool on GOV.UK. They must then secure an unconditional offer from a licensed student sponsor and obtain a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) reference number, which is mandatory for the application.
Applicants outside the UK can submit their applications up to six months before their course begins, while those already in the UK can apply up to three months before the start. Those switching to a Student visa or extending their stay must apply before their current visa expires.
Additional requirements may include a tuberculosis test certificate, proof of English-language proficiency, or an ATAS certificate for postgraduate students in certain sensitive subjects.
Avoiding Common Mistakes
UKVI flagged one critical mistake that could force applicants to cancel their application, lose their fees, and start over entirely: entering a name or other personal details incorrectly. The agency stated, "The most common error is entering a name or other personal details incorrectly." If an applicant discovers such an error after payment and submission, they will need to cancel the application, apply for a refund, and begin a new application.
Payment, Biometrics, and After Submission
After completing the online application, applicants are directed to Worldpay to pay the visa application fee. Those staying in the UK for more than six months must also pay the Immigration Health Surcharge, which provides access to NHS treatment.
Applicants must provide biometric information, including photograph and fingerprints, either via a VFS appointment or through the ID Check app. At the end of the application, they receive a reference number and a confirmation email, which they should keep for their records.
UKVI advises applicants not to contact them after submission unless further information is requested, and to check spam or junk folders for decision emails. Applicants applying from outside the UK must not travel to the UK before the start date given on their visa.
